[EN] Maxime Lenik, aka Xeum, is a French musician of Asian and Slav roots. He wrote and performed his first original compositions at age 10 before taking up drums and percussion studies when he was 14 years old. Maxime graduated from the prestigious Paris and Versailles music conservatories under the tutelage esteemed musicians such as Lionel Postollec and Sylvio Gualda (Paris Opera Orchestra) and Frederic Macarez (Paris Orchestra timpani soloist).
In 2002, Xeum released the world première of the modern rendition of Nicole Philba’s “Nuées Ardentes” (1937) for bassoon, strings and percussion with Trio Joachim from Paris Opera Orchestra, directed by Jean-François Verdier. At the same time, he studied music analysis and composition studies under Solange Ancona and in 2004 performed his composition “Ia-V” for vibraphone and tape at the International Percussion Festival (Journees de la Percussion) at the Paris Superior Conservatory.
Maxime joined the French Air Force Brass Band in 2004 as a percussionist, performing in the great halls of Europe, including at the Theatre du Chatelet and the Palais du Congres in Paris, the Kremlin in Moscow and the Budapest Opera. Outside the Brass Band, Maxime has many performances to his credit, including engagements with Pasdeloup Orchestra (Mogador Theater), the Sinfonietta Paris Chamber Orchestra, and the Ostinato Orchestra for the Festival Classique au Vert.
In between tour dates, Lenik continued to broaden his repertoire with studies in jazz composition and arrangement alongside Marc Bercowitz and Frank Tortiller. He played with jazz musicians such as saxophonist Eric Prost and pop/world singer Sapho (EMI). He then progressed to studio recordings and collaborations with OxmoPuccino, Nuttea, DJ Sek and DJ Michael Canitrot.
In 2005, Maxime decided to broaden his musical horizon and headed to Shanghai to perform on drums and live electronic music in the city’s throbbing club scene. He has since played alongside local artistes such as Coco Zhao and Ben Huang, Erika Lee. Sought by Universal Music China in 2008, Maxime toured with Sa Dingding (BBC World Music Award winner) in Europe playing at the ICA (London), KKL (Luzern), WOMAD Festival (Canary Islands) and at Babylon Mitte (Berlin).
Following a meeting with Shanghai guitar hero Hassan and bass player Jeremi Lasri, Maxime formed together folk rock band Weghur in 2006. In 2009, Weghur represented Shanghai in the Chinese final of the Global Battle Of Bands, an international rock band competition, in Hong Kong. After the tour they recorded their 1st EP “Wild Ride”, toured across China and released their first EP.
In 2011, Xeum moved to Singapore and focused on music production and composition. He collaborated with Danish pop star Sanne Gottlieb/Sunny (Warner). He also scouts and produces emerging local talents such as Fiona Fussi. Maxime has also produced music for fashion shows and events for global brands like Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpels, Trussardi, Shanghai Tang, Ermenegildo Zegna, Piombo, Nike, and Leviʼs.
Maxime has been back in Paris since 2014, producing music for brands such as Cartier, Vichy, Estee Lauder. He focuses on personal projects and collaborations, such as Memorial ACTe, commissioned in 2015 by artist Shuck One as part of the permanent exhibition in the MActe museum in Point-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe.
He also teamed up with Christophe Bollé to create side project WASCA, whose first album was released with Under Your Skin Records. Maxime also releases solo projects under the moniker of Bakean and spins for many envied spots in capitals of electronic music across the world.

Il suit le cursus des prestigieux conservatoires de Versailles et de Paris, sous la tutelle de musiciens reconnus tels que Lionel Postollec, Sylvio Gualda ou Frédéric Macarez. En 2002, il interprète en première mondiale la pièce de 1937 « Nuées Ardentes » de Nicole Philba avec le Trio Joachim de l’Orchestre de l’Opera de Paris, sous la direction de Jean-François Verdier. À la même période, il étudie l’analyse et la composition musicale avec Solange Ancona et en 2004 il exécute sa pièce pour clavier et vibraphone « la-V » lors des Journées de la Percussion au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris.
Maxime rejoint l’Orchestre de Cuivres de la Musique de l’Air en 2004, en tant que percussionniste. Il jouera avec cet ensemble dans des lieux prestigieux tels que le Théâtre du Châtelet, le Palais des Congrès de Paris, le Kremlin à Moscou ou encore l’Opéra de Budapest. À la même période, il se produit aussi avec l’Orchestre Pasdeloup au théâtre Mogador, l’Orchestre de Chambre Sinfonietta et l’Orchestre Ostinato pour le festival Classique au Vert. Entre les dates, il continue d’élargir son répertoire en étudiant la composition jazz et les arrangements avec Marc Bercowitz et Frank Tortiller, joue avec des musiciens tels que Eric Prost et le chanteur Sapho. Son activité de percussionniste l’amène à collaborer avec des artistes comme Oxmo Puccino Nuttea, DJ Sek et Michael Canitrot.
En 2005, il s’installe à Shanghai afin de plonger au coeur de la scène électronique naissante de la ville et collaborer avec des artistes locaux : Coco Zhao, Ben Huang ou Erika Lee. Sollicité par Universal Music Chine en 2008, Maxime part en tournée en Europe avec Sa Dingding et joue dans des endroits prestigieux comme l’ICA de Londres, le Palais des Congrès de Lucerne ou le WOMAD Festival aux Iles Canaries.
Après une rencontre avec le guitariste Hassan et le bassiste Jeremi Lasri, ils forment tous les trois le groupe de folk rock Weghur en 2006, et finissent en 2009 par représenter Shanghai lors de la finale chinoise du Global Battle of Bands, une compétition internationale de groupes de rock à Hong Kong.
En 2011, il déménage à Singapour pour se concentrer sur la production et la composition de sa propre musique. Il collabore avec la pop-star danoise Sanne Gottlieb, ainsi que le talent local Fiona Fussi. Il produit pour des défilés de mode ainsi que pour de grands évènements de marques telles que Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpel, Trussardi, Nike, ou encore Levi’s.
Maxime est de retour à Paris depuis 2014. Il compose pour Cartier ou Vichy, mais aussi une pièce spécialement pour l’inauguration par le Présient de la République du Mémorial ACTe de Pointe à Pitre en 2015.
